Data protection watchdog shows its teeth

A Middlesex accountant has been successfully prosecuted for offences under the Data Protection Act and fined £300 plus court costs. The prosecution followed a failure to register with the Information Commissioner (a nominal cost of £35). Under the Act, organisations that process an individual's personal data may be required to notify the Commissioner. The accountants had received repeated reminders to do so. It is the fourth accountancy firm to be prosecuted in 2008. Certain registration exemptions exist such as data held only for staff administration, advertising and public relations.
