Parking charges hit small shops
While the government is backing Competition Commission recommendations to boost competition and protect small suppliers, a leading business group has warned that it is parking fees that cause consumers to shun town centres. The Forum of Private Business (FPB) believes that town parking charges are killing High Street trade. A survey by the Confederation of British Industry reveals that retailers in cities and towns are experiencing the worst slump in sales for 25 years. The FPB suggests that parking fees are pushing consumers towards out-of-town retail parks. The Forum is opposing a proposed scheme in Nottingham which would charge some firms an annual £185 fee for every parking space provided for employees. FPB members are concerned that this concept could be introduced all around the country.
