A Franchise with Real P-zazz - Interview with P-zazz Founder – Esther Boughton

Published: 17 September 2015

“Perform, Create, Shine” that’s the strapline on P-zazz’s logo. It’s a bold mission but one which, once you meet Esther, seems perfect. P-zazz’s business is to develop real skills and create positive experiences, through music and drama an ethos which goes too for the P-zazz attitude to franchising.

Where has P-zazz come from?

P-zazz was founded 10 years ago by mum of three, Esther Boughton. Like many of us, Esther had a dream, which was to develop and inspire children, through music. She was brave enough to go for it and now owns the UK’s leading school-based provider of performing & creative arts clubs. Nowadays, franchisees run a huge range of clubs for children, as well as clients in care establishments, notching up over 1,000 clubs and over 15,000 participants!

Why offer franchises?

‘Two years ago we developed an opportunity for others to join in our success. This was a reaction to demand from clients, further afield, as well as from people spotting P-zazz as a great business opportunity.’ Esther explains, 'Many of our leaders have families or other commitments; increasingly they were asking to have their own piece of the business. A franchise means you can set your own goals and hours and really achieve that elusive work / life balance  - so it has a huge appeal.'

Isn’t it a risk to ‘go it alone’?

‘Buying a franchise is a huge decision. You should be investing in a strong brand and a proven business plan.’ Esther continues, 'Here at P-zazz we have worked with financial and BFA experts to test and perfect our business model. I couldn't imagine asking franchisees to invest in anything unproven.

‘No franchisor can eliminate the risk but talking to current franchisees and understanding what you want from your business is crucial. Think about your own strengths and weaknesses too  - see if the business you are buying into can help and support you in the areas where you lack experience or confidence. Always take a look at franchisee testimonials  - too it’s the best way to know how things really work out!’

So why has P-zazz been so successful?

'Because our business model is realistic and was developed in line with BFA standards.' Says Esther, continuing;  'Don't fall for the "millionaire overnight" claims of some franchise offers. Creative freedom and the opportunity to make a great deal of money are real - but only if it's the right brand and the right business for you.  Here at P-zazz we place a huge focus on training and supporting our franchisees – not just at set-up stage but ALWAYS. They are running their own businesses but with an expert team in the wings.’

Esther's pride and joy in her company shine through again as she rushes off to meet some prospective franchisees, adding 'Ask any of the clients we work with! They’d say that professionalism and creativity are P-zazz core values - so if you are ambitious and looking for a strong business with plenty of potential we’ll be a perfect match!'

When Esther leaves I feel I might burst into song myself – now, where do I sign up?
