Aspray hosts quiz in aid of The Firefighters Charity

Published: 29 May 2020

Aspray’s property loss assessing network had a belter of an afternoon delivered by a man in braces on Friday May 1, when franchisees from across the UK joined Aspray head office staff for a charity fundraising initiative.

As a franchise network, Aspray has been raising money for a cause close to both its heart and its day-to-day business as a property damage claims management franchise business. This is the Firefighters Charity, which helps rehabilitate firefighters needing help with their physical or mental wellbeing and which also supports their families. For the past 18 months, the loss-assessing franchisees and head office team have been working together to raise funds for this most worthy cause.

Aspray and The Firefighters Charity

Aware that the charity’s usual fundraising activities, such as car washes at fire stations and sponsored fun-runs, have been impossible to stage during social distancing, Aspray put its mind to what could be done to raise money via remote and compliant means and came up with a ‘Kick-start the Weekend Quiz’.

Anyone in the Aspray network was able to join the quiz, for some lockdown light-heartedness. Voluntary donations to the Firefighters Charity were requested in return for the diversion provided and the chance to put the little grey cells to good use.

Question master and Aspray National Business Development Manager, Lorin Smith, operating from home in Preston and donning braces, whilst not the bow tie he had promised (apparently lost on a dance floor somewhere at the last Aspray conference party), pitched the questions in true Bamber Gascoigne style.

Fiendishly difficult questions had been put together in various categories ranging from film to geography, by Marketing Lead, Laura Edwards.  It could be said that some folk threw in the towel far too quickly, just because they didn’t know Oliver Reed died whilst filming for the film ‘Gladiator’ or that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is the most costly film ever made!

Throughout the quiz – which was run on YouTube – participants were able to add comments as questions were posed, although giving answers to the questions was strictly banned. Knowledge on everything from sport to song lyrics was tested to the hilt, with franchisees as far apart as Sunderland and London taking part.

Also tapping into the memory bank was the Firefighter Charity’s Regional Fundraiser, Alan Knell, with whom Aspray has worked closely whilst fundraising.  Alan was delighted to see that, after a thoroughly enjoyable Friday afternoon quiz, £520 had been raised for the Firefighter’s Charity.  In total, Aspray has so far raised an impressive £8,098.10 for this cause.

Aspray’s Managing Director, James Whittle, says, “We are very proud of what our franchise network and head office team has done to raise funds for our nominated charity. Our franchisees frequently see the impacts of fire on domestic and commercial properties and get a feel for what firefighters go through to keep people safe. Helping people in times of distress, is what we do, which is why we are so passionate about raising money for firefighters when they are themselves in distress.”

Should there be a second coming of the quiz, it is likely that some swotting up may occur.  However, whether that would tell you that Boy George was a man without conviction, or that Yossi Benayoun is the only man to have scored a hat-trick in the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League, is debatable...
